Smart University Wi-Fi:
Internet is a basic need for every student and faculty for research work. In this perspective, HEC launched the Smart Wi-Fi project around 1.5 year ago in UET. Wi-Fi service was provided all over the university including hostels, departments and sitting areas. In this project 730 Access Points, Active Directory Server, Firewall, Radius Server, Access & Core Switches were deployed.
Security is the utmost inevitability for the educational institutions, Therefore, HEC launched the Safe Campus project at universities. In this Project at Main Campus UET Lahore, 97 Security cameras were deployed on Boundary wall and entry and exit points. A control room was also established for 24/7 monitoring of all the deployed cameras.
Network Management Systems (Nagios and PRTG):
NMS is one of the most important features for the smooth operation of any Network. Nagios & PRTG NMS are being deployed for the network monitoring purpose at Data Center UET Lahore Main Campus. In these NMS, health and working status of networking devices, live traffic graphs and history of last year bandwidth utilization of every link are being monitored.
Biometric Attendance System:
Biometrics is gaining weight in many areas, from laptops to mobile phones and other technologies. The use of biometrics is quickly becoming a leading tool in workforce management. Many institutions are shifting towards a Biometric Time and Attendance system. The main reason behind initiating this system is to eliminate time theft and increase security and accuracy. Attendance system in UET has been changed from manual to online with biometric authentication. Sql database server is being deployed for the backup and customize software is being used for the centralize management of attendance of all UET faculty and staff.
Virtualization is the process of creating a software-based, or virtual representation of an actual, such as virtual servers, storage and networks etc. This is the single most effective way to reduce IT expenses while boosting efficiency and agility for all size businesses. Virtualization is one of the latest technologies that have been deployed at Data Center UET Main Campus. With the deployment of this technology physical servers have been shifted to virtual machines. An ESXI Server is being used for the implementation of Virtualization in UET. With the deployment of this project overall cost of IT resources in terms of power consumption, space and quantity of physical servers have been reduced.
FreeNAS is an open source operating system that can be installed on virtual or any hardware platform to share data over a network. FreeNAS is the simplest way to create a centralized and easily accessible place for your data. FreeNAS is being used with ZFS to protect, store, backup of data. FreeNAS is a free and open-source software based network-attached storage (NAS) based on FreeBSD file system. In UET FreeNAS has been deployed on a virtual machine. The concept of this project is to provide the centralized storage facility at Data Center. This storage can be mounted as a drive in any of the system in LAN Network.
Kaspersky Security Server:
Antivirus software is the "policeman" at the gate of a computer system. It protects the computer from incoming threats and seeks out, destroys and warns of possible threats to the system. New viruses are coming out all the time. It is the job of an antivirus software to keep up with the latest threats. This is achieved by daily updates of the antivirus database definitions, which counteract the latest threats to provide constant protection. In UET we had purchased Kaspersky anti-virus with the license for 40 computers, but the requirement of this anti-virus was more than that, so we deployed Kaspersky Security Server in UET. With the deployment of this server our users update their Kaspersky anti-virus database from this server rather than from internet.
UET IT team has always tried to facilitate its users. Previously users were launching the I.T. related complains by Phone calls or visiting the Computer Cell Department. It was quite difficult for users to follow up their complains. To save the students time, a Spiceworks helpdesk has been deployed in UET. In this system users route their I.T. related issues by sending an email at [email protected]. A ticket is being generated for every complain and assign to some specific person to address the highlighted issue
Bus Surveillance System:
The purpose of this project is to track the locations of UET Busses in different times. In this project a server and GPS system has been deployed in datacenter and UET’s buses respectively. Server is reachable from internet and GPS System, which is installed in buses. Application level work has been performed by software team of UET.
Web Security Deployment & Configuration:
Cyber Security is the most important and critical aspect now a days. No. of DDoS attacks were increasing from Internet to our servers as the http is not secure protocol. The core function of an SSL certificate is to protect server-client communication. On installing SSL, every bit of information is encrypted. In order to secure the UET domain and all its subdomains, it has been migrated to SSL through Cloudflare.
Bulk SMS Portal for Student & LMS Services:
As per UET’s Bulk SMS requirement, I.T. team has deployed SMS cloud API configuration. In this way we are able to send auto bulk mobile messages to students & Staff and also software level testing through auto mobile messages alert.
SMD Display for Notifications:
SMD display is the latest technology used to display images and videos for advertisements. Two SMD displays have been deployed at UET in different locations and make sure the communication of these SMDs from cloud. These SMDs are used to display the notifications of all events in UET.
