Abstract

In this project, development of a new type of local deformation transducer (LDT), its calibration, setting up data acquisition system and test results is included. Local deformation transducers are proposed to be developed to measure a large range of strain i.e. 0.0001% - 2%. Capability to measure smaller strains will be useful to determine Young’s and shear moduli of pavement materials. Similarly, due to larger strain measurement capability, LVDTs (Linear Variable Differential Transducers) can be replaced with this new measuring equipment. Moreover, an image processing system will be developed to determine very small strain from the digital photographs of the object.
The development of LDT and image processing system will result higher stiffness and strength properties of the geomaterials that will ultimately reduce the cost of the projects. Moreover, with the current existing equipments in Pakistan, it is not possible to determine Young’s/shear moduli of geomaterials by static method therefore such research would fulfill the deficiency in this field of study.
